Beauty and the Earth
When my friend, fashionista Martha Graeff proposed a shoot, I jumped at the opportunity. Martha is a former model, stylist, and fashion buyer. She now produces the popular fashion and lifestyle blog aroundinstyle.com. In other words, she lives and breathes fashion. Our idea was to combine her fashion sense and my penchant for nature photography to contrast the highly designed world of couture with the randomness of nature. Both beautiful in their own way but very different.
With that in mind we headed over to the fabled Vizcaya gardens, one of the few places in Miami that combines nature and artifice so well. The result is a series of photographs of Martha in a striking red gown resting on a huge tree older than both of us together. The veins in her slim and flawless arms seemingly imitating the fine strands running down the trunk of the tree. As you can see, it’s two living creatures, one dressed by nature and the other by man.
Other shots weren’t so planned, Martha just laid down on the ground among the plants and mulch, wanting her gown and skin to be as close to the organic world as possible. And that’s the wonder of working with nature and a highly disciplined professional. One immovable and oblivious to the lens, the other a consummate fashion model with an instinct for the camera. I think the recipe has given us some gorgeous shots to marvel at.
